Online Tajweed Classes — Correct Your Recitation with a Certified Tutor

Tajweed (Arabic: تجويد) is the complete system of rules governing correct Quranic pronunciation. The word itself comes from the Arabic root j-w-d, meaning to improve or to perfect. Tajweed determines exactly how each Arabic letter is articulated — the precise point in the mouth, lips, or throat — and how letters interact with each other in the flow of connected Quranic recitation.

The 14th-century Islamic scholar Ibn al-Jazari, whose foundational text Al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah remains a core teaching text in Islamic seminaries worldwide, wrote that applying Tajweed is an obligation on every person who recites the Quran. Without Tajweed, the recitation contains actual errors in the text of the Quran itself — mispronounced letters, sounds merged or dropped, meanings inadvertently altered.

Most American Muslim families who attended weekend Islamic schools or group madrasa classes as children were never formally taught Tajweed. They learned to recite from memory, but the underlying rules were never explicitly addressed. The pronunciation errors that formed in childhood are still there in adult recitation — and they become harder to correct the longer they remain uncorrected. Our Tajweed course identifies and corrects those errors systematically, one-to-one, with a certified tutor.

What Tajweed Covers — The Full Rule System

Our Tajweed course teaches all major rule categories in sequence, beginning with articulation points and building to the complete set of recitation rules.

Makharij al-Huruf

The exact articulation points of every Arabic letter — where in the mouth or throat each sound originates. This is the foundation of all correct pronunciation and the first topic addressed in the course.

Sifat al-Huruf

The characteristics of each letter: heavy (Tafkheem) versus light (Tarqeeq), echoing (Qalqalah), whispered (Hams), hard (Shiddah), and others. Sifat determines how a letter sounds, not just where it comes from.

Noon Sakin & Tanween Rules

The four rules governing Noon Sakin and Tanween in connected recitation — Idgham (merging), Iqlab (converting to Meem), Ikhfa (concealing with nasalization), and Izhar (pronouncing clearly).

Meem Sakin Rules

Idgham Shafawi, Ikhfa Shafawi, and Izhar Shafawi — the three rules governing Meem Sakin when followed by different letters. Frequently skipped in weekend school teaching.

Madd — Elongation Rules

How long specific sounds are held, measured in Harakaat counts. Madd rules vary depending on the letters following the elongation — Madd Tabee’i, Madd Muttasil, Madd Munfasil, and others.

Ghunnah, Qalqalah & Waqf

Ghunnah — the nasalization sound for specific letters. Qalqalah — the echoing bounce of letters carrying Sukoon. Waqf — the rules for where and how to pause or stop during recitation.

How the Tajweed Course Is Structured

The Tajweed course begins with a full assessment in the first session. The tutor listens to the student recite a passage and identifies the specific errors and gaps. Based on the assessment, a personalized lesson plan is built.

Students who have significant pronunciation errors from childhood work differently from students who read well and want to refine specific rules. The course adapts to the actual student — not a fixed weekly curriculum that assumes everyone starts at the same point.

Progress is tracked after every session. A monthly written report covers which rules have been mastered, which are in progress, and what home practice is recommended for the next four weeks.

Session 1 — Full Tajweed Assessment

Tutor listens to a recitation passage, identifies all errors, categorizes them by rule type, and maps a personalized correction sequence. Costs nothing — included in the free trial.

Personalized Lesson Plan

Each student receives a correction roadmap based on their specific errors — not a generic curriculum. Sequenced from foundational articulation points to connected recitation rules.

Session-by-Session Progress Tracking

After every session the tutor logs rules covered and corrections made. Monthly written reports show exactly which rules are mastered, in progress, and pending home practice.

Who This Course Is For

The Tajweed course is the right fit at multiple stages of Quran learning — from children completing their first reading course to adults correcting decades-old pronunciation habits.

Children Age 6 and Up

Children who have completed Noorani Qaida and are beginning to read connected Quranic text. Tajweed introduced at this stage prevents errors from forming as reading habits solidify.

Age 6+

Teenagers

Teenagers who can read the Quran but have never had their Tajweed formally checked and corrected. Often self-aware enough to notice their pronunciation feels off — this course addresses that directly.

Teenagers

Adults with Longstanding Pronunciation Errors

Adults who have been reciting the Quran for years — sometimes decades — and want to correct the pronunciation errors that have accumulated. Correction is possible at any age with a qualified tutor and consistent daily practice.

All Ages

New Muslims

New Muslims who want to build correct recitation from the start before habits form. Starting with correct Tajweed prevents the correction problems that develop when wrong sounds become defaults early.

New Muslims

Students Preparing for Hifz or Ijazah

A strong Tajweed foundation before Hifz memorization begins prevents errors from being memorized permanently. For Ijazah students, verified Tajweed is the prerequisite — the authenticated chain transmission requires pristine recitation.

Pre-Hifz / Ijazah

How Long Does Tajweed Take?

Duration depends on the student’s starting level. The tutor assesses and sets realistic timelines in the first session.

Get Your Personal Timeline

Child — Starting from Basic Reading

6–12 months

A child starting from basic Arabic reading typically completes the full Tajweed rule set in 6 to 12 months at three sessions per week.

Teenager or Adult — Specific Error Correction

3–6 months

A teenager or adult who reads well but has specific uncorrected errors can address those errors in 3 to 6 months of focused one-to-one work.

Adult — Reading and Tajweed Combined Track

6–12 months

An adult who reads from memory but has never read independently may need a combined Quran Reading and Tajweed track of 6 to 12 months.

An Oral Tradition

Why Tajweed Cannot Be Self-Taught

Tajweed is an oral tradition. The rules were never just written down — they were passed from teacher to student, mouth to ear, across generations. Reading a Tajweed book or watching YouTube videos teaches the theory. Applying it correctly requires a living teacher who can hear your pronunciation and tell you immediately when it is wrong.

A student who reads Tajweed rules from a book will know that ع (Ain) is produced from the middle of the throat. Without a teacher present, they have no way to know whether their attempt actually produces the correct sound or something slightly off that looks the same on paper but sounds different to a trained ear.

The tutor’s live presence in each session is not a convenience — it is what makes Tajweed teachable.

Book vs Live Tutor

Reading a Tajweed Book

Teaches the theory. Cannot confirm your pronunciation is correct. Cannot identify that your ع is slightly off. Cannot stop you from practicing the wrong sound hundreds of times.

Live Certified Tutor

Hears every sound you produce. Identifies errors the moment they happen. Demonstrates the correct sound. Tracks whether the correction is retained session after session.

This is why eQuran Classes is 1-on-1, live, every session.

Frequently Asked Questions — Online Tajweed Classes

Everything students ask before starting their Tajweed course.

Can Tajweed really be taught online?

Yes. Tajweed is an oral tradition — it requires a teacher who can hear pronunciation and correct it in real time. A live video session with a certified Tajweed tutor provides exactly this. The tutor hears every sound through the microphone and corrects errors immediately. This is functionally identical to an in-person lesson for Tajweed teaching purposes.

Do I need to know any Arabic before starting Tajweed?

You need to be able to read basic Arabic letters. If you cannot read Arabic yet, the right starting point is Noorani Qaida. After completing Noorani Qaida, you move directly to the Tajweed course.

What are the most common Tajweed errors for American Muslims?

The most persistent errors in English-speaking Muslim communities are: mispronunciation of the heavy Arabic letters (ص, ض, ط, ظ), incorrect articulation of throat letters (ع, غ, ح, خ), substituting easy English equivalents for difficult Arabic sounds, and incorrect Madd (elongation) lengths. These are all correctable with focused one-to-one work.

How do I know if my Tajweed has errors?

Most people cannot self-assess their Tajweed accurately. The tutor runs a brief assessment in the first trial session — you recite a short passage and the tutor identifies the errors. This costs nothing. You do not need to know in advance whether you have errors or what they are.

Is Tajweed obligatory?

Classical Islamic scholars including Ibn al-Jazari hold that applying Tajweed in Quranic recitation is an obligation (Wajib) on every Muslim who recites the Quran. Some scholars differentiate between the obligation to learn Tajweed (obligatory) and reciting with minor errors due to genuine inability (excused). The practical implication is the same: correct Tajweed is a priority, and it can be learned at any age.

Can adults correct Tajweed errors they have had for decades?

Yes. Old pronunciation habits are harder to break than new ones, but they are correctable with consistent practice and a patient, qualified tutor. The key is daily home practice — applying the corrections outside of class so the new sound becomes the default. Most adult students with longstanding errors see clear improvement within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent work.
